Dracula by Bram Stoker

2.0

Dracula is a dull bore. It starts off with a promising first act, then falls off a cliff immediately afterwards...

Of course, not all that follows Harker's chapters is bad. The writing is uneven but not always unpleasant and some nice journal entries and images help you take a break from all of the boredom, but an extremely anticlimactic and meaningless ending means, this won't be a reading you will come out of thinking enduring it was worth it, unless you enjoy the ride for what it is (which seems to be the case of many people around here, fortunately).

What is to be enjoyed here is mainly the atmosphere and the Gothic elements. You can find those better executed in other fiction, but it's hard not to recommend at least checking out the beginning involving The Count and his guest in Transylvania. But do be warned that somewhere around the second half, Stoker seems to give up on his own story...

Dracula has an interesting aura surrounding its historical context and undeniable cultural legacy, but anything that doesn't involve the mythology it's responsible for is completely undeserving of its high status in horror fiction, and you would be surprised by how much of it there is to be found here.

In other words: it's 10% cool and 90% dated.

Just watch the superior What We Do in The Shadows instead.
