This was a very unique and strange book. The writing style was weird but I loved it - I loved the prose and the way the story was told. It had an ominous atmosphere and it was really creepy, especially the first part. Something about the writing made it feel claustrophobic. The way it recounted Frances’ life from her childhood to her current life was amazing. I loved each little snapshot we got of a moment from her past. The way it showed the decent into madness was well done and I enjoyed the way it blurred the line between what was real and what wasn’t. Frances was a very interesting and complex character. I liked her childhood friendship with Jasper. I also liked the exploration of family: the different relationships she had with her grandparents, her mother and her father. The plot was definitely interesting and weird - it surprised me a lot in the second and third part. A part of me enjoyed it and a part of me just didn’t. I feel like there was a message there that I didn’t get. I also didn’t really understand what actually happened and I was left with a lot of questions. It had so much potential, but overall it didn’t work as well as I wanted it to.
