Greek Fire, Poison Arrows, and Scorpion Bombs: Unconventional Warfare in the Ancient World by Adrienne Mayor

dark informative reflective medium-paced

5.0

Overall, I really enjoyed this book! Mayor did a great job of walking readers through different types of unconventional weaponry and warfare; she was able to clearly show how each escalation, either in cruelty or complexity, really built upon previous versions of weapons. Fire arrows escalated to fire catapults to fire bombs to basically napalm in the ancient world. Also! Something that really stuck out to me is that humanity has never had an original idea ever; like all the weapons created now were basically done back in the ancient world, just with different materials. At the end of the book, Mayor makes a good point that filled me with a lovely existential dread (just in time for Christmas!): what do we do with our unused biological and chemical weapons? Mayor walked readers through different options, but lads… it’s not looking good. Like we really can’t just toss these things in the trash and call it a day; like what do we do with them?? Girl help. Anyway! Great book, super informative! Loved it!
