The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

5.0

This was such a wild ride?! Oh my goodness. And what's crazy about this is that 70% of this is guessable or cliched but here I'm sitting on the edge of my seat like 'YES, I NEED MORE PLEASE'.

So while I think not everyone will enjoy it for that reason, I on the other hand could not bring myself to put this down.

When I think of strong heroines and a story of political deception and royalty, it is THIS that I want. In addition to that, Holly's land of Fae is a turbulent place of danger and darkness. There's nothing pretty here but the faces of those who want to kill you.

Jude talks about being constantly scared and hiding that fear under anger. I can't say I really felt that fear, but then again I at no point in this book, could really trust anyone. I just expected everyone, family included, to just suddenly backstab her. Which is actually REALLY stressful while reading 300something pages. So maybe her fear was more of subconscious thing in my head.

And Jude, oh I just love her. She's witty, smart, sharp tongued, fierce, and just an all around badass. And Cardan! Haha. Dear child, I HATED him as much as Jude did in the beginning. He is such a jerk. But then things happen and by the end I'm laughing at his self deprecating jokes and I just love him so much now. Still a jerk but I'm sorry, I can't help it. He has soft spots and humor. I need more of him. And more of their bickering.

And of course they're working up the ranks of a hate/love relationship. Which part of me is saying 'No. Not heathy. You stop that right now.' while the other part of me is screaming 'KISS KISS KISS.' It's been awhile since I've read a good hate to friendship+ relationship like this, so I admit I'm conflicted. I'm such a sucker for them. But they're also conflicted, so we're going to work this out together.

Plot wise, like I said, you can see things coming while other things are totally blindsiding. The book is split into two. Like a part one and a part two. And the end of each has such major twists that you could possibly sustain an injury from the whiplash. But that's what makes it so much fun.

I really want to second book now please.
