How to Stop Time by Matt Haig

2.0

DNF'd at about 40% nothing too terrible or offensive, I just don't engage with Matt Haig's writing this is my 4th book from him with my second DNF. His concepts are often unique and interesting, I read the blub on his books and I'm instantly entranced, but once I start reading it just doesn't grab me. I think it is due to the borderline depression, self-pity, unfulfillment of life, and suicidal thoughts that seem to have run through every book I have read from Matt. Either he repeats a trope that I just don't engage with or his feelings as an author are too present in his writing. It is not that I need happy endings and not every story needs a moral, but I feel the potential of the plot is never fulfilled nor engaging for me, as the depressed main character just comes through raining self-pity and misery on everything. I hope this makes sense I just find it difficult to explain my reaction to his writing. Overall I don't DNF often (just 2 this year out of 71 reads) but this was just a slog for me.
