A Place for Us by Fatima Farheen Mirza

4.0

This was a powerful story, but I wasn't as addicted to it as I wanted to be (and expected to be).

A Place for Us is a beautifully written family drama that goes well beyond typical family problems. This novel explores drug abuse; father/son relationships vs. father/daughter relationships; growing up in the United States as a Muslim; the sibling bond; arranged marriage vs. marriage for love; and so, so much more.

As I look back on this book as a whole, I absolutely loved the plot from start to finish. If I were to give you the gist of the story right now, you'd probably love it, too. However, while reading it, there was a bit too much of a lull in the middle of the novel. The first brought brought me in and captured my attention; the final part was an emotional one that I happily cried for. The middle struggled, though. I was still into the story, but didn't necessarily want to pick up the book. I wasn't entirely hooked.

this is Fatima Farheen Mirza's debut, and she's young and I'm blown away by the fact that this beautiful, mature story came from a young, debut author in the most beautiful way. I definitely recommend it as a read - you just need to persevere if it starts to feel slow!
