Better Living Through Birding: Notes from a Black Man in the Natural World by Christian Cooper
5.0
This book is so wonderful. What a lovely and beautiful person Christian is. His stories about being an absolute nerd about comics, movies, and birds are heartwarming to listen to. The progression of the strained relationship with his dad that eventually gets better is inspiring. This book covers the topic of race quite a bit. I’ve read other books by Black authors and they can be quite heavy to take in at times (not a criticism, just the way it is). I’d recommend this book for anyone interested in becoming more anti racist because the stories of birds, travel, comic books, and family dynamics don’t detract from the message of Queer rights and BLM, but can show that people who’ve historically been marginalized are people with passions and interests all the same. I wish I was friends with Christian in real life because he’s so fun and intelligent. I really did love this book so much. Next stop, his nat geo special. His forgiveness and not wanting to make Amy Cooper’s life more difficult is also very admirable. I want to be a better person because of this book
