Thoughts I had while listening:
Loving animals and astrology is something I plan to do when I’m middle age (not that far away) so I plan to be just like Janina in that aspect (but don’t call her that). I want to sit with her and talk and learn how to do someone’s horoscope.
The idea of people having names that suit them rather than given names is something I can get behind, especially as my name regularly gets spelt wrong, pronounced wrong and shortened without permission; which makes me hate it. I found the description of “testosterone autism” a bit out of place, it’s strange that someone who seems emotionally intelligent as Mrs Duszejko would believe something that borders on ableism.
There’s something magical in the words of this book, even in events that would normally be mundane. I love eccentric people with unique outlooks on the world and I think that’s part of it, as well as Olga’s great writing and the wonderful translation and narration by Antonia Lloyd-Jones. Although I would have preferred that there hadn’t been an accent used for Dr Ali, I think we could have guessed he had an accent given that he was living in Poland having moved from the Middle East.
Interesting point made about how much society is willing to overlook (in terms of hunting, killing animals for meat or just for fun) and how that would leave the world around us in the future. Very relevant to current events in the world, where we have live coverage of a genocide and there are still plenty who can overlook or excuse that in varying forms of propaganda.
Review:
I love love loved this book. Unfortunately I guessed the twist about halfway through but that didn’t diminish my enjoyment, because it still kept me guessing the rest of the way. I guess this wouldn’t necessarily be for everyone but I’ll be recommending it to everyone anyway. And it’s just really funny too.
They had it coming, they had it coming, they only had themselves to blame. I’d do the same if anyone hurt my pets
