I don't usually like violence/gore, but this was so gripping and tense and I loved it right from the start. Stephen Graham Jones did such a beautiful job revealing the initial catalyst story and the threat looming bit by bit until I knew exactly what was going to happen (and was terrified about it). The four main characters (Ricky, Gabe, Lewis, Cassidy) were well-written and specific - I could see their different personalities and how they all would fit together as friends really clearly. The writing was a great balance between beautiful and poetic and straightforward and made me feel like I understood exactly what was going on at all times, like everything happening was reasonable and realistic (even when I couldn't actually imagine it happening in real life). I look forward to reading more from Jones (and thanks to the acknowledgments section, The Antelope Wife by Louise Erdrich)!
