This romance novel took me by surprise. It was all over booktok. Like everyone else, this was enough for me to decide to give it a go.

Boy. Am I glad I did.

As much as this is a romance, its a satire. Book Lovers doesn't shy away from poking fun at itself. It intentionally utilizes romance tropes, playing with them, subverting them and breaking apart the messages they send. Henry—in a way that I've seen others call too obvious, but that I find fits this novel's unique brand of flirty satire—rather lucidly placed her MCs in the publishing industry, so that, in their viewing their lives through that lens, they do a lot of the heavy lifting for you. For this sort of light-hearted read, I have no problem with this heavy-handed satire whatsoever.

I loved both of the MCs, likely because I—like them—never identified with the classic romcom gal when I was younger. I always thought that I'd have to suddenly give up my ~impressive big city job~ (gag. sorry.) and change my mind about having children to get a Hallmark Happy Ending. So, reading a love story about these two tightly wound workaholics warmed my cold, Meredith-Blake-esque heart.
