The Cartographers by Peng Shepherd
5.0
I love love loved this one. Nell is the daughter of two cartographers, but her mother died when she was young, so she's only ever known her father. Who fired her from the NY Public Library. So Nell's emotions are mixed when she learned that he has died.
But more than this relationship, the book is about maps. "the purpose of maps is to bring people together," is the mantra she learned from her father. But what is so special about the gas station map she found hidden in his desk, the one that got her fired in the first place?
And what about the intentional errors cartographers sometimes make in order to maintain the integrity of their data? Shepherd includes a touch of magical realism that is delightful.
I'm "The Book Club Girls Podcast" conversation with the author, we hear about a true story about the errors and data that inspired this story. Apparently this was the real Agloe? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agloe,_New_York
