I originally read the book because I loved the Movie so much. However, I quickly found that I needed to treat both movie and book as two separate art forms before I started comparing the two. I was delighted to love the book as much as I loved the movie. I definitely loved book Sophie so much more. I loved how everything was intertwined in the book as opposed to the movie, where everything is more straightforward. In the book Sophie has two sisters, but in the movie we only see one, Lettie. I loved having more of Lettie. Book Howl is so much more vain and melodramatic than in the movie. We see a playboy Howl who only woo’s women only to drop them when they seem interested in him in return. In the book and movie we hear about Howl stealing women’s hearts and souls, the difference is; it’s true in the book just not in the literal sense. This is explained away as him searching for love despite not having a heart.
