The Monsters I Remember by N.E. Yeomans

5.0

Despite its size, this little book is jam packed with plot. I really loved the flow of this story. I was a bit confused at first as the story has multiple character perspectives but once I realized who was narrating in first person everything clicked into place seamlessly. This story is real, gut wrenching, raw, and heartbreaking. The characters are complex and dynamic humans. Their roundness showed in every single chapter from the kids hanging out together at school to the adults coping with loss, grief, and financial struggles. I liked the tightly written plot but wish it was longer overall to afford plot expansion in certain areas (i.e the final chapter). Although the ending is “spoiled” in the opening prologue, it does not soften the blow of reaching that climax. Overall an excellent story and a very promising debut novel for this author.
