I would give this book 0 stars if I could. After the first 2 chapters I was just rage-reading, which I guess is its own form of entertainment. Spoilers ahead but that shouldn't matter to you because you should not ever pick up this book.

This book spits in the face of school shooting survivors. Filled with characters genuinely saying that the shooting was their fault (individually and at the community level), it came across as tone deaf at best and blatant victim blaming at worst.

The characters were nothing more than caricatures; every attempt at character development just lead to more shallow stereotypes. The characters were also inconsistent, contradicting themselves multiple times in the span of a page (e.g., one character standing up to the shooter and telling him to take his revenge out on her because she's not afraid of him anymore, only for her to turn and run five seconds later, then profess that she's not afraid of him anymore AGAIN the next page; side note, the shooter is supposedly an ace marksman and hates this girl, but somehow misses her multiple times when he has a clear shot??). They also made terrible choices throughout the book that were played as heroic. No, it is not valiant nor heroic to go and confront the shooter to give your sister "time" when you and your sister have already gotten to safety, the majority of the survivors are out of the building, and the SWAT team is coming in. It's idiotic.

The deaths of the two characters that we were set up to be devastated about fell so flat. Claire's little brother's death because he was barely given any time on-page (side note: Autumn goes to help him, grabs a first aid kit, then proceeds to administer no first aid??) and Tomás (the "heroic" brother and one of the narrators) because it was such a stupid move that it made me think "well, what did you think was gonna happen??"

Do yourself a favor and steer clear of this book. The only good thing I have to say is that my reads this year can only go up!
