National Dish: Around the World in Search of Food, History, and the Meaning of Home by Anya von Bremzen

Did not finish book. Stopped at 0%.
Not only does the author come off as extremely condescending and elitist, but she also uses extremely outdated and inappropriate terminology. Some examples include transphobic language, use of the term “wife beater” to describe a tank top, and inappropriate use of “ghetto.” I kept referring to the front of the book to see what year this was published and was constantly shocked to see “2023.” I also wanted more information on people groups/anthropology than I was given. It’s clear that the author does have a lot of food education, but it seemed like research was severely lacking on the social history side of things. I felt validated in reading some other reviews noting that she glosses over complicated history and simplifies diverse people groups. Overall, I loved the idea of the book, but it was not well-executed. The author was out of touch with everyday people and wrote as if it were the 1990s.
