The Dog of the North by Elizabeth McKenzie
5.0
Penny left her awful husband, quit her job, and plans to make a fresh start but first she is tasked with cleaning up her grandparents messes. Penny’s parents went missing in Australia years ago, her stubborn grandmother is suffering from intermittent dementia and a severe case of hoarding, her grandfather’s horrid wife will probably kill him if Penny doesn’t find him a new home, and Penny is responsible for helping all of them while trying to get her own life in order.
I loved everything about this brilliantly chaotic book. There is a hilarious and lively cast of characters who engage in nonstop shenanigans. Penny has to hurdle through endless crises that become more and more far-fetched as the book progresses and I admired her heart and resilience through it all. I had no idea where the story was going at all times and I couldn’t get enough. The story remains fun and lighthearted while touching on heavy themes such as grief and mental illness. Read it if you want an entertaining story full of laugh-out-loud humor, adventure, mystery, and genuine friendship.
