The Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston
3.0
It was okay.
I will start by saying that I struggle with pure romance books due to being a painfully realistic person. I find it hard to feel sorry for a character that is not really helping themselves…
Now then, first and foremost the audiobook may have done a disservice purely because of the O.M.GEEEEEE Jersey girl accent that kept being given to every girl in New York. All the modern “slang” such as, perf, totes, ect made me literally want to die. I hate it so much and it just made the characters sound ignorant.
Now then… after about 35% percent when Florence has to go home to her family is about the time I started to enjoy the book. The romance and her ghostly insight really did a lot for the book. I felt like Florence spent a little long on the woe is me, I’m a failure, stage BUT it is what it is. I can understand a spiraling anxiety mindset when I see one.
Was the romance predictable? Yes.
Was it painfully corny? At points.
Did I still enjoy it ? Yes.
I feel like this book let you appreciate two people who were in fact “corny” romantics. All the painful puns, and simple acts of affirmation went along way. I also appreciate the author sliding in the small bit of her punching her shitty ex in the face. That was an immense feel good detail.
