The Heartbreak Years: A Memoir by Minda Honey
funny
reflective
sad
5.0
The book opens up with a reference to the euphoria for the Obama administration and how that paralleled her optimism for her twenties, where she measures her growth by her romantic interactions (Tyler, Henry, Chevy, Flash, Green, Hunter, Keon, Nick) over those 8 years and beyond. At times, the red flags were crimson, so I applaud the author’s brave vulnerability to let some of these stories out of the vault. Most were sad, some hilarious, and a few heartbreaking as she touched on her battles with consent, alcohol, and self-worth. I really enjoyed the author’s confessional writing style and how she paired her experiences and what she learned with social commentary.
Graphic: Alcoholism and Toxic relationship
Moderate: Misogyny, Racism, Sexual content, Grief, and Sexual harassment
Minor: Drug use, Infidelity, Racial slurs, Rape, and Police brutality
