I really liked this book—if you go into it wanting the movie and/or musical, you might be disappointed.

The musical is very loosely based on this book and the movie is based on the musical.

This truly does explore the concept of evil—are we born evil? Do circumstances and the way we treat people result in them growing into becoming 'evil' ? Are those 'evil' beings just doing what's expected of them, or what they know, not necessarily with nefarious intentions? Etc.

It also pays lots of homage to a classic, and my favorite movie, of course.
So while it might be a bit slow-paced, it's a fun read IMO with fun world-building.

4 stars.
