Gillman’s softly-colored illustrations and economical text are perfectly paired. The book appears deceptively simple for the emotional wallop it delivers. That, of course, is the key to fairy tales, which have always hidden larger meanings behind the masks of straightforward stories.

The very first story took my breath away.
