Black Tudors: The Untold Story by Miranda Kaufmann
informative
slow-paced
2.5
I picked this up, hoping for a more rounded picture of UK history in Tudor times than what is taught in schools or seen in documentaries or films. And it did that, it provided some more information and context of Black African and Caribbean people in Britain. However, this was one of the driest pieces of nonfiction I have ever read. I am someone who enjoys Daniel Defoe and still found this almost intolerable to read. What could have been engaging and interesting I struggled to get through and retained even less. I also tried the audiobook, hoping this would be more engaging, and just came away with the thought, why wasn't this written by a Black or POC historian? I felt uncomfortable with the language (even if historically accurate), terms and assumptions made by this white author.
