This was probably the first book I read by myself, and I dare say the same is true of most Portuguese children. It follows the story of a good fairy who stops attending to her duties to admire her own beauty on a lake.

In a world where children may easily feel the pressures of body policing, this story about a fairy who chooses kindness and duty over beauty can be a healthy influence. It certainly was for me. It is a great way to teach kids about the importance and, indeed, the magic of helping others.

I believe it has been translated, although it is not an easy find. I recommend it for kids aged 7-9, who are just mastering their reading skills.
