The Midnight Guardians by Ross Montgomery

5.0

Quite possibly one of my new favorite books. A war story that somehow manages to perfectly balance the realistic, gritty and dark and more fantastical elements. The characters are all equally enjoyable and rounded, and at times even funny without it feeling unfitting for the tone. The ending, which I will not spoil, is just so beautiful and bittersweet it almost made me tear up. Also, Montgomery has a real knack for writing unique and snappy dialogue. I've yet to read another book that has such fun and unique voices for all of the main characters, to the point I could easily tell who was talking based on what they were saying alone.

I really have no gripes with this one whatsoever. I go more in depth on why I love it so much in the review below, but as always that one contains spoilers. If I can say anything it's that I heavily recommend this book. Easily one of my favorite recent fantasy reads and maybe favorite books in general.
