I read this book purely for the spooky Halloween vibes and to give myself a break from the intense fantasy reads I usually pick up this time of year, and it definitely provided exactly what I was looking for. The Ex Hex is a cute rom-com featuring magic, cute small towns, and witches. Oh, and talking cats, of course.
This novel had everything I expect when it comes to rom-coms, but with a spooky twist. I enjoyed reading from Vivienne's perspective--I thought she was pretty relatable ( at least to me), and I loved the close relationship she had with her aunt and cousin. And seeing Vivienne come into her own by the end of the story was very sweet.
With that said, despite the magical premise, I didn't fall head over heels in love with this book if only because it felt a little bland. While I liked Rhys, the connection between him and Vivienne didn't seem all that strong on an emotional level. And in the back half of the book, the magical elements tapered off a bit.
In the end, I think this all comes down to pacing and the length of the book. If it had been a bit longer, I think we could've gotten more depth to Vivienne, Rhys, and their relationship. Despite that, I still had a lot of fun reading this book! It was the perfect read for this time of year, especially for someone who is a huge fan of romance like me.
