Daughters of War by Dinah Jefferies
3.0
I knew that this would probably be the case but this was too sappy, too obviously aimed at women, too flowery for me. There were parts I did enjoy; the descriptions of the French countryside, while they did verge on too much, were very evocative and made me want to visit. I liked the fact that it wasn't all cut and dried in terms of all Germans being nazis, or being evil, and all French citizens being resistance fighters, and actively fighting. There was a mix but to be honest none of the characters felt very three dimensional. Perhaps that was due to this being the first book in a series, I don't know, but the characters thoughts and actions were a bit wooden. Aside from the really detailed descriptions of food and clothing, there were huge parts of the story glossed over and nothing that eventually happened, I hadn't already guessed would happen.
I would say that I did enjoy it but I probably won't read the next one in a hurry.
