The Vásquez Mistress by Sarah Morgan

5.0

The Vásquez Mistress or The Vásquez Baby (both titles are apt).

Raul Vásquez is tempted by another horse rider, while on horseback himself in the Argentine Pampas. While Faith hadn't noticed a stranger approach, and to discover that he had been studying her on the sly! And when she interacts with him, she thinks of him as an ordinary working cowboy. Not that Raul corrects her. I love [a:Sarah Morgan|45898|Sarah Morgan|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1485947728p2/45898.jpg]'s stories. I just love them. Faith is a vet who wanted to work at Raul's polo estancia under his chief vet, Eduardo. Their facilities are considered the best in the world. And hence, she landed in Buenos Aires with that sole aim.

When a polo match brings them face-to-face for the first time, in their true identities, Faith is miffed that Raul doesn't trust her in her professional capacity. A horse is about to give birth and he wants Eduardo there, instead of letting her handle the situation.

It was a rude shock when the story jumped ten months straight from a suggestive dinner to Faith meeting with an accident, and the hospital not knowing about whom to contact. For the past few months, her home had been in Argentina but now she no longer had a home. Her memories of him hurting her tortured her, increasing the pain to her head injury. It's been two weeks at the hospital, nearing discharge, but the doctor doesn't advice for her to stay alone. As is the norm, Raul thunders into the hospital ward in search of his wife. And he thinks she brought everything on herself, she was the one who damaged their relationship. She ran away from their marriage of two hours.

They both take their own sweet time in revealing the elephant in the room, which is her pregnancy. Especially when Raul still maintains that all that he wanted was their arrangement, without marriage, or babies. And she doesn't want anything to do with him now because she thinks she lost her baby. And Raul still thinks she got pregnant on purpose. He's a sex maniac, who doesn't even want a proper conversation in the fear of his past tumbling out. He's such an obtuse man, even after so many pointers, he doesn't know what is commonly called the art of conversing.

There is only them in this book, with a fleeting scene about one of Raul's ex. It was obvious from the beginning that there is something in Raul's past, but it is so sad. It has a beautiful ending, but an epilogue would have been nice.

P.S. A couple, Julieta and Mateo, were mentioned. And so convincing was their appearance that I thought that they had a story of their own but, I couldn't find any Harlequin/Mills and Boon with their character names.
