I really, really loved this book. This author is just brilliant at making familiar-feeling fairy tales her own, and creating complex worlds with compelling characters.
The story mainly follows Miryem, a money lender’s daughter who excels at turning silver into gold, Wanda, a drunkard’s daughter who helps Miryem’s family, and Irina, who is the daughter of a Duke that is married to a demon. These three women’s lives intersect through the desire to protect those they love, and to save the kingdom from fire and ice. This is supposedly a Rumplestiltskin reimagining, and I get those vibes, but the story is wholly its own. There are some characters’ perspectives that I think could have been cut out, and like Uprooted, some of the paragraphs and descriptions can seem long—but it was a brilliantly told story and I fell in love with its world.
