How to Say Babylon by Safiya Sinclair

challenging dark emotional informative reflective sad medium-paced

5.0

An absolutely beautiful and moving memoir about a girl growing up in a Rastafarian family in Jamaica. It's clear by the gorgeous prose that the author is a trained poet, and I loved that she read the audiobook too. The story was a bit slow at times, between the prose and the sometimes microscopic details she provides. But it was worth it to paint a complete picture of her life and to understand the emotions she felt as her father grew angrier with every year. I found the ending so moving, for her to find the strength to face her father, and even more strength to allow him back into her life. Highly recommend picking this book up, I already want to get the physical so I can highlight my favorite passages.
