The Wives by Tarryn Fisher

1.0

Like the meme review suggests, I was so turned about by this book, and not in an enjoyable way! I think I'm nearing the end of my rope with this genre, as it's no longer "leisure reading" or an enjoyable break from work and study.

I don't think I'm someone who "can't have any fun" as I continue to evolve politically, but I am someone who can no longer "have fun" reading a book that is chock full of ableism. This installment of the "deranged wife" psychological thriller subgenre has nothing helpful to tell us about how people are mistreated in mental institutions, or about how women are subjugated due to their real *and* alleged mental illnesses.

Fisher is a glutton for plot twists, and the mangled story we receive at the end has no clear statement except "Thursday is crazy." I want to hold out some hope that Tarryn Fisher was attempting to mirror how abuse can destabilize someone's grasp on reality, but even if this was her goal, it's a failed attempt—The Wives' neverending convolutions just became too much to make sense of. You don't have to be a prestige author to do better than this.
