I had high expectations for the book because I count The Count of Monte Cristo as one of my favorite novels of all time and I couldn’t wait to check out more by this brilliant writer. I really enjoyed this, however, I don't think it was of the same standard as The Count. The beautiful writing and twisting plot was still present.

But at the start of this novel, the Musketeers plus D'Artagnan's characters were written quite superficial and juvenile. This did get better for most characters except Porthos. While most main characters and some supporting characters became fully dimensional as we progressed through the book, Porthos never did. But overall I did enjoy all the other characters, with my favorite characterizations being Athos, Aramis, Milady, and the Cardinal.

I really enjoyed the multiple smaller storylines that collated into the final ending. I also loved the deviations from the action plots to experience Dumas version of the 1620s in France, the people, the culture, and some events. This all helped really support the main plot and strengthened your getting to know the characters through the intrigues and plots at court. The dialogue and quick action scenes really push you through the book, while the descriptions and side adventures really allow you to be absorbed into the world. I just found something 'slap stick' or 'campy' and 'hollow' of the honorable actions and characterizations at the beginning, that I don't think was intentional that made this a 4 star for me.
