The Astonishing Color of After by Emily X.R. Pan

5.0

I'm not sure I've ever loved a book so quickly! I was on page two of this book when I realized the narrative voice it held was going to draw me in and keep me there for the rest of the book. The writing is beautiful--truly so consistently great. The title itself is already an indication of that I think, but reading it is a whole different thing. I didn't expect the book to include any magical realism really, and although I'm not a big fantasy person, I was so engaged in this book's magic. The way the story interwove heritage, ethnicity, mental illness, romance, and family was really impressive and really engaging. I found myself just full on sobbing by the end. Overall, I don't have much else to say other than I really loved this book and everyone should read it!!
