Mort by Terry Pratchett
5.0
It’s a coming of age narrative! About death. I adore pterry. Like yes, ostensibly the protag is Mort–and he is–but equal narrative weight is given to Death and Death’s choices, and Death is an equal component in the plot resolution. Amazing. I love it.
This is also where the humor is starting to feel like Discworld to me–he’s got enough confidence and also enough books behind him to start building running gags that take longer to pay off versus just slapstick & genre mockery.
