This Much Is True by Miriam Margolyes
4.0
I found this book quite confusing. It actually made me like Miriam less than I did before I read it, but that's not because I'm a prude and found either the language or the sex distasteful. I just didn't know she had such a temper and an absolute lack of what is right and proper to do in public. Considering she went to Cambridge and had elocution lessons and seems to be very aware and absorbed in the class system (while somehow pretending to be a socialist with a driver and personal assistant), she has absolutely no idea how to behave in polite society. I especially found her brushes with the law distasteful and utterly outrageous. Like a stroppy toddler having a tantrum. You were at fault in every interaction in which you found yourself on the wrong side of the law and came across with the most entitled of entitlement. Speaking to a police officer the way she did, not to mention the man on the train who was simply having a telephone conversation and was unaware of her circumstances. Utterly unbelievable.
She also treated her life partner appallingly. Also, while I am endlessly fascinated by her documentaries, I find her acting to be extremely over-the-top. She aimed for self confident and careened headlong into smug, passing arrogant, and skirting entitled on the way. Still, do I believe this is a true autobiography, leaving nothing behind? Absolutely. The name dropping went over my head because I had no idea who most of the people she was talking about actually were.
I recommend this if you are a big fan of her work, or if sex talk makes you titter. You can also be sure that you are getting an accurate portrayal of the real person.
