Luck in the Shadows by Lynn Flewelling

5.0

Man I forgot how much I love this book. I used to read this probably once a year. Then I shelved it and even thought about getting rid of it and the other two books in the trilogy to make space for new books. God I am glad I did not.

I just rewatched The Road to El Dorado earlier this week. (Yeah, I know.) It made me want to reread this trilogy. If you have seen the movie you understand the link between one and the other. Plus, I think Tulio would make a good Thero.

Anyway. This is what can only be described as a "rollicking" adventure. I think the front blurb also mentions "skullduggery" which is also an appropriate word to use here. The writing is tighter than you get from most fantasy books. Hell, Flewelling was able to tell a complete story in two books, not three (Traitor's Moon is a totally different story!) which almost never happens in fantasy (cough George RR Martin). The characters are among some of the most vibrant and interesting you will ever meet. It was also fun to give this book as well as Stalking Darkness to my dad, presented without any context, to see what he would make of the relationship. I will do the same for you. Read it and see.
