If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio
5.0
I honestly think this might be my favorite read of the year. If not first it's def second.
I went into this book assuming I would not enjoy it. I am not into Shakespeare, plays, acting, poetry, or really any of the main details I thought this book would revolve around. That obviously, turned out to be completely wrong. I LOVED this book.
Going into this with little to no background Shakespeare knowledge did not hurt the story for me. The author does such an amazing job of explaining how the acting works from descriptions of the stage set up (in stages), the learning of the lines, the emotional toll, and the overall imagery of the plays itself. You are essentially learning with the characters and through their eyes.
I felt like even though I guessed some thing early on.. the sheer emotion that I felt throughout the story still made the reveals jarring to me. I wanted so bad for these characters to make it through. It was heartbreaking going through this journey with them, but I loved it at the same time.
HIGHLY recommend.
