this was excellent, extremely gripping.

Pros:
- primarily, its a really good, gripping story with really good plot, good writing and great character development and diversity.
- Zhi's journey to recognising themself as what we might now call nonbinary was handled well and i'm glad they found acceptance and love in the end
- also, I adored how the villains were complicated, with genuine drive. I could see how they thought they were the hero of the story from their POV. All the side characters were well developed tbh and it felt like an intricate web of people, not just cardboard cut outs at all
(- shallow thing, but the cover is also gorgeous)

cons:
- the only drawback was that I didn't feel too much, I don't know, like this book kicked me in the gut you know? This book had plenty of angst and pain, but something about it felt like it would turn out okay and so I was never really, emotionally wounded by it
- it was also just a bit predictable, I guessed a couple twists before the happened, but not too far before so that was okay

overall, a very well delivered and gripping story with a nonbinary person at the centre. it was a little bit of a shame Zhi didn't have the terms to directly identify themself, but not everyone likes labels anyway.
