Poor bitch could not catch a break.

Margaret is forced to leave the countryside when her father quits his position, and move to a factory town where the gruff Mr. Thornton lives. Once there, Margaret is faced with tragedy after tragedy, and is forced to reconsider her stances on the world.

This book took a while to get into for me, but once I was in it, all I could think was “Jesus is there anything that won’t happen to Margaret??”. Like, this book is seriously tragedy after tragedy for her, with some misunderstandings thrown in just for spice.

Also—there was a whole subplot about mill workers striking for better wages, and the relationship dynamic between master and worker. If I’m being honest? I didn’t really care about that! I suppose it was interesting, and certainly a more salient plot than a lot of Victorian literature I’ve read, but still; I came for the romance. And romance I got! I loved how we got Mr. Thornton’s thoughts / impressions (and others), it really added to the experience of the book. I loved it and can’t wait to watch the mini series!
