In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

5.0

Rarely does anything live up to the hype, but this book does. Well-constructed and well-written, the narrator never intrudes, offering the reader the story as it was, to make their own determinations as to who to believe and who to doubt. At the same time, it reads almost as a novel. It never gives up its ending (although anyone is welcome to search online for it) and the account is fascinating. Perhaps it gives too much space to the perpetrators for some sensibilities, but, writing nonfiction, you're held to the sources available. Any fan of true crime needs to read this, and anyone who wants to write nonfiction should read this. Spellbinding and heartbreaking.
