I really enjoyed learning more about Velazquez and the storied history of this painting! I did feel towards the end that the book is a little bloated - initially I had appreciated all the chapters that were a little off topic from the painting in question but served to flesh out our understanding of the artist, the time period and lots more, but as the book went on I got a smidge fatigued with quite how many diversions from the core tale we had.
