Yellow Crocus by Laila Ibrahim

5.0

While the topic of slavery is not often an enjoyable subject to read about, this book was immensely enjoyable. This book will warm you heart with the love that these characters share for one another. Yellow Crocus was artfully written and brought deep emotions to the surface. This book was able to bring forward the close connection of a wet nurse and her young charge, while being able to not painting slavery in a particularly favorable light. This book is written from the POV of several of the characters so you are able to really get an authentic view of what emotions these characters could have been experiencing. This book follows Mattie as she is taken away from her family, to raise Lizbeth from infancy; and we watch as the bonds form to hold these two ladies together grow despite the difference in skin color.

One of my favorite parts of this book ,is bringing able to grow alongside Lizbeth from infancy to adulthood. We as readers are able to watch as she learns about slavery and her feelings on the matter, as she's raised by a loving slave while also taught that slaves are less than a man. We are also able to watch Lizbeth blossom into a young lady as she tries to make a life for herself in her wealthy society.

The characters within Yellow Crocus are fabulous and are easy to connect with. The writing style and storyline of this book were well thoughtout and flowed nicely. This by far has been one of my favorite books that I've read recently and I hope that this author continues to put out works of art such as this.
