Are Prisons Obsolete? by Angela Y. Davis

5.0

Really great, quick, to-the-point, & understandable primer on prison abolition, including many of the issues surrounding the current (as of 2003) existence of prisons. Davis discusses multiple important aspects of the prison-industrial complex, breaks down the impact of both race and gender on incarceration, and provides good critiques of other proposed methods of 'reform' and the like. There's so much that could be expanded upon, but that's all the more reason to read more on the subject! I would very much recommend to anyone, especially budding leftists and people beginning to get into the BLM movement. Prison abolition is crucial to understand, and I hope to someday have this guide on my own shelves!
