The Rover by Aphra Behn
4.0
this is definitely the best restoration comedy that we have studied so far! i love the way that behn foregrounds her female characters- the play starting with a conversation between the two sisters was refreshing.
not all about the rake!
i mean willmore was usually the centre of attention, but he seems a fairly mild rake in comparison to some of the others. he messes around with angellica and hellena but gets his punishment for that - a gun to the chest! angellica is great.
and the resolution is all happy and perfect. belvile and florinda, willmore tamed (?) with hellena, and both girls escape the lives that their father had set out for them... its nice
i really enjoyed the city heiress last year when i read it, so this has lived up to my high expectations.
