The Hero of Ages by Brandon Sanderson
2.0
I was pretty keen on the first book in the series and liked the second one well enough. This one was a hot mess, and by halfway through, it was a labor to read (I was reading it aloud to the family). Sanderson cheated by pushing so much exposition into the epigraph for each chapter, and on the whole it just felt haphazard and stitched together. It's a relief to have finished and to move on.
----
On a second reading in 2022, my feelings about this one from the 2016 read above have softened a little. I had forgotten my comment about Sanderson cheating with the epigraphs, but partway through the book, I again noticed that and thought it was a big cheat. I never found it a particular labor to read this time. Looking back, a 2-star rating for this book feels a little stingy but I'm not sure I'd go up to a 3.
