Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë

3.0

I feel it is redundant to review a famous book, but I guess it's good to have a fresh opinion?! I know that many of you here have degrees in English Lit and have spent a good amount of time reading and re-reading such Classics. I'll be honest, I sped through a few pages and couldn't understand some bits properly.

Jane Eyre is definitely ahead of its times; I can see why. The way Jane holds her principles and self-respect higher than what people think a woman of her age should or should not do/be is commendable. She is brazen in her ways.

I loved the first half, but then the book slowed down for me and I was having a hard time keeping up with it. The writing is purely descriptive, hence, at places I felt that more was written than necessary. I also felt that this book was nothing but a soap opera, but then I read somewhere that it's 'romantic sensationalism'; well, that definitely makes sense to me now.

To conclude, I'd say that despite everything, this book kept me hooked for all its 400-odd pages.
On a scale of 'Bad to Great', I believe, for me, this book was fine. I won't go ahead and say that Classics are not for me, but now I know that all Classics are not for me.

PS I did not buy the romance b/w Jane and Mr Rochester!
