Wow I am so disappointed in this book especially after loving Leave the World Behind. I’ve seen reviews saying that “nothing happens” which usually doesn’t bother me as SOME thing must happen (a la Come and Get it). My critique is less that nothing happened and more that I’m not sure if I’m supposed to FEEL anything for these characters. Brooke’s quick descent into entitlement and madness was alluring for sure. But she never felt three dimensional. Asher and Kim and Maggie and Malcolm all just felt there.

This is a deep dive into race and class, adoption and generational wealth. I get that for sure. But I don’t think it was successful at really questioning any of these things.

I did enjoy the ending. It felt like we were seeing Brooke peel apart page my page. But why??? That I am still not sure of.
