I hate to say it but I was quite disappointed reading this book. I had high hopes after the raving reviews of the Netflix series from a few years ago, but it just left me wanting so much more. I did really like the writing style and the descriptions, and the characters were intriguing, but all in all nothing much happened and I was bored!
There were a maximum of 5 slightly spooky events throughout, but these were never fully expanded on, and all of the characters just seemed to move on without much caring about what had happened. Mrs Montague was one of the only really interesting figures and she was only present for a small section towards the end.
I feel like the ending was predictable to an extent, and for the last part of the book I was just waiting for the inevitable.
I will say though that you really do feel the descent into madness throughout. The atmosphere building within the book was one of the only highlights.Hearing the conversations Eleanor was having with herself and her slowly feeling that she was becoming a part of the house, suspicious of the others, was very well done.
Overall this left a lot to be desired but it was atmospheric and had a good writing style.
