The Color Purple by Alice Walker
4.0
(4.5 stars)
Let me begin by saying that this novel is incredibly powerful and exceedingly important.
Alice Walker's 'The Color Purple' is an historical fiction novel which tells the story of the lives of African American women in early 1900s Georgia. It is written in the style of letters, the first half is our protagonist, Celie's, letters to God, and the second half of the novel is letters between Celie and her sister, Nettie.
This book covers deeply disturbing topics, such as physical and sexual abuse. It is profoundly raw and honest and yet, it is also full of love and the strength of women.
It is written in African American Vernacular English (AAVE), which took me a little while to get used to as I was listening to the audiobook (which Alice Walker narrates by the way!!!). However, I think that this was the perfect decision by Alice Walker as it made the story all the more real.
