Dear Martin by Nic Stone

5.0

This was such an accessible and enlightening book about racism, police brutality toward blacks, and a Black Lives Matter book that doesn't say the saying once but walks the walk.

At the opening of the book, main character Justyce is arrested for carjacking when he's merely trying to help his intoxicated ex-girlfriend. That opening scene is so illustrative of how blacks are treated differently than whites. This also prompts Justyce to write to Martin Luther King, Jr., and act like Martin. As we follow Justyce in his mostly white prep school, we see conversations with his white friends and his close friend Manny. He has feelings for his white classmate SJ. And then tragedy strikes.

I'm not taking away anything for this, but the "Dear Martin"-ness of this novel fades for a big part of the book. I don't necessarily mind because I think the story is excellent.
