The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab

3.0

I am giving myself a "finished," even though I rage-quit this one at 72%. I didn't rage-quit the actual book; just shelved it for another time. Now was a fine time, but this book was almost as infuriating to listen to as it was to read.

I like Addie as a character. I like Henry also. I like the author's writing style. Straight up: I hated the way this book feels so repetitive. How many times/ways do we have to be told that Addie going back home after long periods of time is going to yield her feeling disappointed and sad? How many times do we have to be told she is learning how to navigate her "deal," so that she can function? How many times do we have to hear about Henry's curls, the way people look at him, or how tumultuous his former relationships were? How many encounters between Addie and Luc did we need to get to the point?

What would have been an enjoyable story became insufferable after the third or fourth iteration of something that already happened. I get what the author wanted this book to be, but IMO, it just needed to be whittled down.
