The Death of Vivek Oji by Akwaeke Emezi

5.0

The writing and structure of this story is beautiful, the flow and jaggedness perfectly reflect the plot. It is heartbreaking, frustrating, and makes you angry. This is provoking and emotive and feels autobiographical. I don't know if real events inspired this but it feels like it is. It is not all tragedy there are threads of strong friendships and a strong love both romantic and a mother's love throughout. But it is overwhelmed by political, cultural, and sociological hate, selfishness, and violence. Giving you a truly painful experience.
